Der Krieg in Syrien zwingt die beiden Schwestern und Schwimmerinnen Sara und Yura Mardini 2015 zur Flucht. Als auf ihrem Weg über das Mittelmeer der Motor des Bootes versagt, springen die beiden ins Wasser und bringen das Boot nach Lesbos. Dort beginnt Sara einige Zeit später, sich ehrenamtlich für Geflüchtete zu engagieren. 2018 wird sie verhaftet und einer Reihe schwerer Straftaten beschuldigt – darunter Beihilfe zur illegalen Einreise und Mitgliedschaft in einer kriminellen Vereinigung. Sara wird auf Kaution freigelassen, wartet aber seitdem auf ihre Verhandlung – ihr drohen 20 Jahre Haft.

The war in Syria forced Yura and Sara Mardini to leave their country. On the way across the sea the motor of their boat breaks away. The two sisters, both swimmers of the Syrian olympic team, jump into the water and manage to pull the boat to the coast of Lesbos. This experience brings Sara to return to Lesbos and help refugees in the local camps. But her involvement is criminalised and she faces 20 years of prison.
